Two Seasons Of Intimate Opera
Two Seasons Of Intimate Opera
JUNE 2024 POCKET MOZART:
An Operatic Journey
From his childhood in Salzburg, Mozart’s operatic journey took him to Munich, where he enjoyed his first big success with Idomeneo, to Vienna with Figaro and Cosi to Prague with Don Giovanni and Clemenza and back to Vienna with Magic Flute. As an artist he began with the naïve pictorial beauty of Bastein and Bastien written, incredibly, when he was 12 years old, and travelled through themes dealing with political controversy Figaro, doubts about marriage Cosi fan tutte gender punishment Don Giovanni and, finally, to the mysticism and profundity of The Magic Flute.
Our evening of favourite pieces from these works will be linked with dramatic readings of excerpts from Mozart’s letters to/from his father, his soprano wife, Constance, his sister Nannerl, and the various Entrepreneurs who commissioned them; excerpts that connect with the musical selections presented and where the accent will be on ensemble repertoire.
Nothing is more charming or comic than a Mozart Quintet or Sextet!

NOVEMBER 2024: POCKET TOSCA
Puccini’s dramatic master-work only gains in impact as the decades roll on. Viewed originally as an a-typical 19th century example of feminine strength and independence, today’s audiences revere this very quality as a significant milestone in the centuries long march of emancipation.
This pocket production captures the musico-dramatic power of the score and libretto but is also laced with comic interjections from the Sacristan which many productions fail to recognise as a balancing theatrical element that Puccini intended.
